Master the art of grant writing

Course Description

Most courses like this discuss “writing” a grant proposal, but the process begins well before that with identifying an appropriate opportunity, one that aligns with the goals as well as the capabilities and partnerships of your organization. As such, only one module covers how to “write” a grant proposal.

That said, the writing will be the easy part once the first few modules are complete and you have:

  • Researched and assessed funding opportunities,
  • Identified the strengths your organization has that make it uniquely qualified to respond to the chosen opportunity,
  • Approached strategic partners to fill gaps identified through the above process,
  • Planned the proposal, and
  • Set internal deadlines to keep everyone involved on track.

Completing this course will give students a solid understanding of best practices in how to secure grants and, in turn, build effective relationships with foundations over time.

The course consists of instructional videos and readings. You will need to submit a couple of thoughtful discussion posts for instructors to gauge understanding, but most of the time and tasks involve developing your grant proposal. Through this, you will learn best practices and gain experience that will prepare you for the next funding cycle.

Learning Objectives

    1. Identify appropriate funding opportunities and understand the goals of the funder
    2. Persuade yourself that you’re the best applicant for the selected opportunity
    3. Persuade others that you’re the best applicant for the selected opportunity
    4. Plan the work to develop a compelling and relevant grant proposal
