This course provides a foundational understanding of the American labor movement. You will learn about what labor unions are, why they exist, and the events and individuals that shaped the labor movement as we know it today.   

 Learning Outcomes

  • Students will understand what a labor union is and the relationship between the economy, at-will employment, and the need for unions. 
  • Students will be able to construct a personal connection to historical events that shaped the labor movement. 
  • Students will understand basic union values. 
  • Students will understand the four tools unions need to gain power and become an equal partner to management in any organization 

Format: This non-credit course is offered online using the Canvas LMS, over a 30-day period. It is a self-paced asynchronous course. This course takes approximately 5 hours to complete. Participants will be assessed throughout the course to demonstrate their proficiency on the subject matter. They must pass all assessments before receiving the course badge.
