Course Description
Tick Safety Essentials is a practical, beginner-friendly digital badge designed to help participants stay safe outdoors. Learn which species and where ticks are found in Nebraska, how and which diseases they can transmit, how to prevent tick bites, how to remove a tick safely and what to do with it afterwards and where to get accurate, science-based information from Nebraska Extension and other trusted sources.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the ecological role of ticks and how environmental and climate factors influence their range and the diseases they transmit.
- Recognize ticks and identify the common tick species found in Nebraska.
- Describe basic tick biology, including their life cycle and behavior.
- Explain how tick-transmitted diseases are spread and recognize general signs and symptoms commonly associated with them.
- Understand when to seek medical care (e.g., if symptoms appear after a tick bite) and know how to communicate this importance to others.
- Practice evidence-based tick safety behaviors (preventative behaviors, proper tick removal and storage, symptom monitoring)
- Advocate for regular tick checks and proper, safe tick removal techniques.
- Explain how evidence-based preventative measures (e.g., repellents, clothing choices, habitat awareness) reduce the risk of tick bites and infection.
