Write It Right: Academic Writing Essentials (Intermediate Level)

Course Description

This course is designed for intermediate-level English learners to develop the ability to write clear, well-structured academic paragraphs. Students will apply the full writing process—including prewriting, drafting, peer review, and revision—to improve both the content and accuracy of their writing. Emphasis is placed on producing organized paragraphs with strong topic sentences, logical support, and appropriate transitions.

Through guided instruction, sentence-level practice, and collaborative feedback, students will build confidence and competence in writing a range of academic paragraph types, such as narrative paragraphs, expository paragraphs, cause/effect paragraphs, solution paragraphs, and opinion paragraphs, etc.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply all stages of the writing process (planning to revising)
  2. Construct accurate, varied sentence structures
  3. Develop unified, coherent, and cohesive academic paragraphs
  4. Use appropriate transitions and formal vocabulary
  5. Analyze and revise their writing based on peer and instructor feedback
  6. Compose multiple paragraph types with a clear academic purpose and structure

Target Learner

This course is designed for intermediate English learners (B1–low B2 on the CEFR scale) who are preparing to transition from general English to academic writing. These students typically:

  • Can write simple sentences and informal paragraphs but lack clarity, cohesion, or academic structure
  • Are beginning to understand paragraph organization and formal tone
  • Need support applying grammar and vocabulary in more structured writing
  • Are preparing for future academic coursework in English or language proficiency exams like IELTS or TOEFL

Ideal learners include:

  • International students enrolled in intensive English programs
  • Learners who have completed general English courses and are moving toward academic preparation
  • Students who need focused practice on writing academic paragraphs before progressing to full essays
  • Exchange students or professionals looking to improve their writing for school, work, or standardized testing contexts
