Course Description
This course offers a two-part exploration of adolescent substance use, beginning with an in-depth look at adolescent brain development and why alcohol and drugs have a particularly strong impact during this stage of life. Participants will gain an understanding of the neurobiological differences in adolescents, how substance use alters brain development, and how recovery can support neurological healing. The second half of the course focuses on SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment), introducing evidence-based screening and assessment tools tailored for adolescents. It also addresses the role and limitations of body fluid testing in treatment and concludes with a discussion of effective treatment options for youth with substance use disorders.
