Course Description

This course explores how stepfamilies communicate to build, negotiate, and reshape their relationships across roles, experiences, and time. Participants will examine key turning points identified by stepfamily members and learn about five unique developmental patterns (trajectories) observed in stepfamilies. The course provide practical applications for clinical work and supporting stepfamily members.

Learning Objectives

  1.  Recognize how stepfamilies form, live, and change via their communication. 
  2. Understand stepfamily members’ perspective on their family turning points.  
  3. Use strengths and challenges of stepchild and stepparents roles. 
  4. Apply unique dimensions of stepfamilies that grow positive and resilient. 
  5. Harness knowledge about stepfamily communication in clinical practice.
